Local libraries are a great way of finding free, fun and educational activities for the young people in your life, which is especially helpful during the school holidays. Here is a wrap on what we had running during the Christmas School Holidays in 2025.

We kicked things off with a visit from the remarkable rainbow fish!

Everyone loved hearing the classic story ‘The Rainbow Fish’ by Marcus Pfister, as well as enjoying some new favourites like ‘Some fish have moustaches’ by Heidi Walkinshaw. The kids then got to create their own magical rainbow fish, bedazzling old CDs with lots of beautiful, shiny things. They really enjoyed the craft and were very pleased with their efforts. Thank you to everyone who came along!

Next up, we gave a call out to all the young swashbuckling sailors for a pirate themed day. It was ‘ships ahoy!’ with over 30 kids reading fun pirate stories, doing crafts and hunting down treasure. A big thank you to First Mate Yvette for running the plank walking activity, Quarter Master Gloria for giving out the treasure and of course to Captain Sam for delighting the kids by singing ‘The Pirate King’ no less than 11 times! A mARRRRR-vellous time was had by all.

Wrapping up the activities we had a WHALE of a time reading beautiful whale stories and singing fun fishy songs. A favourite was ‘Migaloo’ by Mark Greenwood. The kids then made wonderful whale collages using different paper, paints and markers.

It was a truly joyful time at Kempsey Library with lots of laughter and fun had by children and their carers alike.
